MET Studio, in collaboration with Academy Studios, designed & built The BugWorld Experience at the Albert Docks, Liverpool.
Visitors were taken on an immersive journey of the world as seen through the eyes of bugs. Starting with an audiovisual show, visitors travelled through recreated Tropical Forest, Savannah and Woodland habitats. Visiting Desert, Water and Your World habitats were more stylised, changing visitor pace and mood. Live specimens were located throughout supported by hands-on and audiovisual exhibits, and interaction was encouraged with appropriately themed exhibits such as ‘Dung Ball Rally’ where visitors had to roll a dung ball over an obstacle course in a Wii styled game. At field stations in the habitats there were also opportunities to hold bugs and learn more about them. Unique to The BugWorld Experience was an area called Encounter Zone where visitors were able to spend longer getting up close and personal with a broader range of bugs, learning about the conservation programme run by BugWorld and even having the opportunity to eat bugs!
The MET & Academy Studios team also designed the educational facility and back of house husbandry areas, working closely with the project team in the delivery of this visitor experience.‘BugWorld isn’t huge but it is very well done. Everywhere you go, you see the world through an insect’s eyes, with ‘tour guides’ to tell you about them, plenty of hands-on exhibits and the encounter zone, where the brave can handle the insects.’
